History of Collages

Collage originated from the French ‘collage’ meaning sticking or to glue. Dating back further than we might think, many mistake collage for a more modern practice or art technique, however, the term was invented by famous artists, Braque and Picasso. Picasso created his first collage piece called ‘Bottle of Vieux Marc, Glass, Guitar and Newspaper’ all the way back in 1913.

It is thought that collage began a lot earlier than the Picasso era, with Japanese artists sticking paper onto silk in the 1100s. This led to a rise in educational art pieces called flap-books which contained diagrams made out of paper for teaching anatomy to students in the 15 and 1600s, they contained layers stuck onto paper to show training surgeons what was contained in the body of humans and animals, such as skin, muscles, and organs.

Since then the collage technique began to expand in the 1920s with a lot of artists following suit. Although the collage technique is more modern than, say, renaissance-era paintings, it is still quite an established art form.
